San Diego Shoppers Learn How to Accessorize

Published : 5/5/2008 by Vanessa Valiente

Nothing makes an outfit pop better than accessories, particularly jewelry.

Jewelry can turn a simple top and jeans ensemble into chic glory. Jewelry is also a good way to update your wardrobe or indulge in trends without breaking the bank. Though, my favorite part of adding jewelry to my wardrobe is not having to worrying about my necklace not fitting after I have a late night burrito.

The only dilemma is that with the variety of available options, it can be hard to tell which pieces make you look modern and stylish and which make you look outdated and clueless. Whether it's high-end or low-end, it's imperative not to confuse what is currently on the market for what is currently fabulous. For starters, neon, elastic and gigantic plastic anything is no good.

You want to look for layering different lengths of gold necklaces, unique charms on a delicate chain and interesting stones in rich, bold colors. You also want to explore the nautical inspired and really unique pieces done with metals, paper or leather.

If you are seeking to go for the higher-end, stop into Haute Culture in La Jolla and take a look at the lines Elisa Gonsalves and Lush. My favorite piece I recently saw at Haute Culture is a gold locket with filigree that screamed extraordinary. But unfortunately, not everyone can afford extraordinary.

If you are looking for something less expensive, walk into Fresh on Garnet in Pacific Beach and be amazed by the selection there. Although these pieces won't last as long as the higher-end designs, they are still fabulous. From gold necklaces and wild earrings to pendants and cuffs, you cannot leave this store without purchasing a little something.

One last reminder when adorning yourself with jewels is to keep your look balanced. If you are sporting fantastic earrings, go low-key with a simple necklace or steer clear all together. And if you have some crazy rings on, skip wearing a bracelet. The best idea is to keep the focus on your main piece.
