San Diego Style Guide to the Summer Global Warming Look

Published : 5/27/2008 by Vanessa Valiente

It has become quite obvious that San Diego is undergoing some global warming issues. First there was the heat, then there were the clouds, then there was the heat again and now we have the rain.

True, this concern extends far beyond an outfit. But seriously, what do you wear on an afternoon of errands when it might instantly turn from steaming to freezing?

The key to the global warming look is layering. This applies for both genders, but this week I shall focus on the ladies. Start off with a pair of dark wash jeans, perhaps from Moda Gabriela in Banker's Hill. Be sure that they are properly hemmed so as not to drag on the wet asphalt. Sante's Tailor downtown does a wonderful hem job.

For shoes, you must go close-toe. But to keep your style spring oriented, wear a simple flat in a fun pattern or bold color. Try to pick one without any ribbons or bows. You can find some fabulous close-toe flats at Mint in Hillcrest. To keep them clean, spray with "Protect-All" to guard your kicks from water and dirt, available at Target, Payless or any similar store.

For your torso, start with a spring-meets-summer shirt. It could be a nautical tank top, a charming tee or a peasant blouse. Then, to add style and warmth, throw on a light, fun and durable vintage coat from Wear It Again Sam in Hillcrest. If you are still cold, top off your outfit with a lightweight summer scarf from Haute Culture in La Jolla.

You are now stylishly ready to take on San Diego - rain or shine.
