THREAD San Diego is growin' up, now setting the picturesque Sheraton Hotel Harbor Island into cultural upheaval in the name of fashion and urban lifestyle. And, it all goes down on Sunday, August 17 from 11am to 6pm, unleashing upon San Diego a fresh index of designers, avant garde entertainment, lifestyle luxuries, and VIP lounges.
In anticipation, DiscoverSD.com spotlights top THREAD designer: Giacini Atelier. From trends to inspirations and the last outfit on earth: take a peek inside Giacini Atelier handbags.
Q. How would you describe your handbags?
A. Giacini Atelier handbags are designed to be both fashion-forward and vegan-friendly by using no animal products. All three collections by Giacini Atelier are manufactured in the USA with the finest of fabrics to create an urban chic style that is trendy and timeless. Our handbags exude a retro, feminine vibe making them the perfect accessories for women of diverse lifestyles.
Q. What are your influences?
A. All sorts of aspects of life, including art, music, film, architecture, fashion, textiles, history, and nature. I can be inspired by anything and everything, but above all, family. Growing up in Brazil with an art and design background, my inspiration is not bound strictly to fashion. Ranging from the beautiful Brazilian landscapes such as the Ubatuba and Parati beaches, to musical geniuses including Caetano Veloso, Marisa Monte, New Order, U2 and Everything but the Girl, my influences are truly limitless.
I also look to the work of artists like Rothko, Toulouse Lautrec, Edward Hopper, Degas, Mary Cassatt and Morisot, photographer Edward Weston, architect Oscar Niemeyer, and of course, the keen fashion sense of well-known icon, Jackie Onassis.
Q. What type of shopper do you design for? And, what do you want them to take away from one of your bags?
A. Giacini Atelier handbags are uniquely created to be both chic and versatile; they are a perfect complement for the gal on the go. Women of all lifestyles looking for feminine and practical bags will love Giacini Atelier accessories. Designed with inner and outer pockets, our handbags appeal to women with a lot on their plates, who prefer carrying multiple items in one purse without it looking overstuffed, or feeling unbearably heavy. Fans of the label often rave about how light the fabric bags are to carry compared to more weighty leather purses.
When purchasing a Giacini Atelier handbag, shoppers can confidently take with them a quality designer accessory that is manufactured with a high-fashion style, and with the utmost attention to detail - and all right here in the US. Since our bags do not use any leather or other animal products, women can sport a modish flare while still feeling environmentally conscious.
Q. I read that you were inspired by your grandmother who designed gowns in New York. What would she say about your collection?
A. My grandmother passed away shortly before I decided to make Giacini Atelier my full time career. She did know, however, my plans of starting the design company, but unfortunately was unable to see it take off.
Ironically, her passing led many things to blossom. After hearing various stories at her wake and burial, I was ultimately inspired to launch Giacini Atelier. Many members of my family, including my grandmother, crossed oceans and endured all sorts of sacrifices so that eventually I could have opportunities for a better life. I then thought, "I owe it to myself, and to my ancestors, to give this thing a go." Soon after, I filed for my business license, and Giacini Atelier was established.
Q. If tomorrow was your last day on earth, what would you wear?
A. Being Brazilian, I would wear a bikini of course, because that would mean I would be spending my time at the beach enjoying the sun, sipping a Caipirinha and watching my husband and 3-year-old son jump through the waves.
