It’s safe to say that buying a mattress is one of the most important home purchases you can make, because when push comes to shove, isn’t one of the greatest desires in life (well, besides love) a good night’s sleep? However, choosing the right mattress can often be a tricky and highly subjective choice – what is comfortable bliss to one person may feel like a dense piece of plywood to another. With so many choices on the market, from traditional coil and air, to latex, and memory foam, buying a new mattress can be quite confusing.

Why Your Mattress Matters: According to four sleep experts at WebMD, neither bells and whistles nor a super-expensive price tag necessarily mean one mattress is better than another. The right stuff, they say, should be firm enough to provide support to your back, neck, and legs, while still offering some cushion and recoil for comfort.

“It's a delicate balance,” says Charles Cefalu, MD, Chief of Geriatric Medicine at Louisiana State University in New Orleans. "You want a mattress that is firm enough to distribute your weight or you'll wake up sore due to your shoulders sagging or your hips sinking. On the other hand, you don't want to sleep on a board.”

Alan Hilibrand, MD, Professor of Orthopedic Surgery at Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia and a spokesman for the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, agrees that a firm mattress is the most beneficial choice.

"As a general rule, people tend to be most comfortable on a firm mattress, but there's a lot of variation," says Hilibrand. "Researchers have tried very hard to study this in a scientific fashion and have found that there is too much variability between people to come to any firm conclusions about what's the best mattress," he explains.

Hilibrand suggests each shopper should devote time – usually 15 to 20 minutes per mattress – testing various sleep surfaces before making a decision. When you lie on your side, your spine should feel aligned. So if your shoulders and hips are sinking, the mattress is probably too soft. Likewise, if you feel pain and discomfort, it's probably too firm a selection. When you are shopping in San Diego for a brand new mattress, choose Metro Décor for all your “peaceful night’s sleep” needs. With over 30 years of experience in the mattress and furniture industry, the owners of Metro Decor are uniquely qualified to help customers get what they want at truly affordable pricing.
