Summer style in San Diego normally involves short shorts, swimwear and sundresses. It's definitely my fav time of year and season of fashion because I absolutely love resort style (reminiscent of a tropical vacay. Hawaii anyone?) After all, the warm weather is the No. 1 reason I moved to San Diego about seven years ago.
But here's the problem with warm weather style: bold prints and colors can be hard to transition to cooler weather, and rightfully so. Taking pieces from one season to another involves a little bit of fashion bravery, and a little bit of fashion know-how. So I asked the super-fashionable Hunt & Gather in University Heights (one of my fav San Diego vintage boutiques) for a little insight to summer fashion trends and how to successfully take them to fall.
Besides the extremely fashionable finds for both men and women, Hunt & Gather's re-worked vintage services are second to none, on top of its selection of new items. Along with accessories, items for the little ones, local designer crafts and vinyl records, it's the perfect place for when you don't want to risk seeing a girl or guy with the same shirt on at a party. So we caught up with store owners and husband-and-wife team Lee Reynolds and Zoe Crenshaw, for their fashionable insight.
Funky Florals
"Florals are hot and they really pop on a black base," says Crenshaw. "It takes something feminine and sweet and makes it dark and edgy. Think about mixing florals with stripes, or pick one of the colors from the floral print and add a solid piece of clothing like a pink tank top or denim shorts. For fall, add black legging or tights and a leather jacket, that way the flowers will be the focus."
Teri's Trends Tip: I sometimes feel like a 5-year-old when I wear floral prints. To avoid the toddler vibe, choose floral prints in a darker color, and keep the entire outfit dark from head to toe. This will give that edgy badass feeling that counter acts the soft n' sweet floral vibe.

Wild Native
"Tribal is huge right now," says Crenshaw. "I love the look because there are so many variations to chose from, and it looks like you've been traveling the world. I really love African prints because of the bold colors, and Indian prints are always light and delicate but beautifully intricate. You can throw on a tank dress with an interesting print and sandals to have a great summer look. You can also go for a chunky piece of jewelry from Indonesia or Pakistan if you want to spice up any outfit going into fall."
Teri's Trends Tip: Tribal is a trend that can sometimes make me feel like I'm wearing a costume or just trying too hard. I'll opt for accessories within the trend that's a little more subtle than loud yellow ikat prints, like wooden bangles, a bold, statement necklace with multicolored gemstones, or a colorful printed scarf.

Teri's Trends Fall Fashion Tip: I love trends like these where pieces you buy now can be worn beyond the season. My go-to transitional outfit from warm to cool temps involves these colorful items with a menswear-inspired piece like a tuxedo jacket, paired with slim fit cigarette pants and skyscraper heels. Fall makes me want a tailored and crisp look to go with the weather, and the pop provided by tribal and floral pieces gives just the right dose of color to go along with a darker outfit.
