Top Ten Fashion Trends and Where to Shop

Published : 1/30/2009 by Vanessa Valiente

The New Year unveils not only a new President - but new looks and upgraded takes on timeless styles.

With so many trendy treats to nibble on it can be tempting to feast on them all. Instead, stick to the best and discover the top ten fashion trends of 2009 - and where to get them in San Diego.

Thigh high boots: Forget your image of Julia Roberts zipping up her boot in Pretty Woman. On second thought, embrace that image and lose the prostitution. With the perfect attire, thigh high boots can go from cheap to chic. Pick up your pair at Cedros Soles in Solana Beach and team it with a loose frock with short sleeves and a high hem. You can spot this dress in silver or purple at Home in Encinitas. All you need to add is a medium sized belt to cinch in the waist and create a flattering silhouette.

Plaid: It will be difficult not to find this pattern. From department stores to thrift shops, plaid is planning to take over your wardrobe. Simply walk into Lacy’s Boutique in Encinitas to see if you desire the casual plaid button front top with extended hem or if you are more interested in sporting the sexy strapless plaid romper.

Mimosa yellow: Named by Pantone as color of the year, this upbeat shade was chosen to bring optimism in a time of economic uncertainty. Pick up your sunny scarf at Bella Moda in Encinitas or a beeming yellow eccentric top from Divinity Salon and Boutique.

Mini skirt: Surprised? You shouldn’t be. The mini skirt has been gone too long to not be reinvented. It can sometimes be hard to find, but try poking your head inside Home to snag a vintage mini or stop into Divinity Salon and Boutique and multi-trend by purchasing their plaid version.

Fabric flats: Efficiently stylish, everyone should own a pair of patterned fabric flats. You will find the best selection in the affordable Studio 12 20 in Chula Vista and the higher end Cedros Soles in Solana Beach. If you are feeling the graphics of this trend but want to keep it more street casual, try instead Milo Shoe Gallery in North park to get a one of a kind design or pattern on a pair of Vans or Keds.

Fringe clothing: From silky chic strings dangling from the bust of your downtown dress to hippie leather on your boots and bags, fringe is here to stay. Take your pick of fringe at LF La Jolla.

Mixed metals: Micha, San Diego’s jewelry designer to the stars, brings you this year’s hottest in ‘gotta have’ jewelry. You can find her mixed metal gems in Bird Rock’s Ashen Boutique and Salon, Let’s Go in La Jolla or even Neighbourhood in University Heights.

Bold bags: The natural colored utilitarian handbag will always be in style, but this year steer towards the “look at me!” purses. Whether it be a graphic print from Vintage Religion in North Park or a gold and cork structured tote from The M Collection in Carlsbad, this accessory will dress up your tee and jeans uniform instantly.

Bejeweled everything: You will see jewels decorating your shoes, swallowing your necklines and devouring your party purses this year. You can find this truly glamorous trend on Cedros Soles clutches (can’t get enough of this boutique), adorning Bella Moda’s halters in Encinitas, slathering a short Phillip Lim dress in Tucci and sparkling on sandals and flats in Baby Mabel’s in Solana Beach.

Crazy clutches: The 2009 clutch needs to have the color, the details and the texture to get you noticed. Rebecca Norman Boutique in Solana Beach has just the pocketbook for San Diego stylistas. The mix of bold hues, enthralling textures and metal adornments will elevate your appearance at any party.
